Water Fasting

Water fasting is often adapted by individuals who are after weight loss or body cleansing. This method has been performed since ancient times and it has been proven effective in many ways. However, it would be wise if you first look into the pros and cons of such a procedure before considering doing it.

How Does Water Fasting Work?

When you go on a water fast, you will have to go for several days without food. And this includes other types of liquid food too, like juices and milk. You are only allowed to take in water for the whole duration of the fasting period.

Advantages of Water Fasting

Everyone knows the importance of water even when one is not fasting. And for this reason alone, we can get an idea on how useful water is for our bodies. Water enables efficient flushing out of toxins from the system and this is accomplished by urinating and sweating. If the body lacks moisture and water, then the process of elimination will not be as effective.

As water is pure, it will also limit the body’s exposure to harmful elements. Unlike juices, it doesn’t contain artificial sugar and other types of unnatural ingredients. And even if you use natural ingredients for your juice recipes, it will also not be as effective as water as far as cleansing is concerned; since the fruit and vegetable components would still have to go through proper digestion.

Disadvantages of Water Fasting

One of the major disadvantages of going on a water fast is that it will cause hunger pangs to the practitioner. While you may be able to discipline yourself and curve your appetite while doing the procedure, there is a tendency to overeat after the method is over. And binge eating is not only dangerous, but it will also reverse the cleansing work already done inside your body.

Depending on water alone can also make you feel weak and sluggish throughout the day, making it difficult to carry out the day’s normal routines. In fact, practitioners of water fasting are advised to stay in bed while carrying out the program. Otherwise, one may feel weak and dizzy due to the lack of food.

Should You Go on a Water Fast?

It is highly advised that a doctor’s recommendation is sought first before adapting a water fasting method. And if you are just a beginner, you might want to test the program for only a short period of time, like 1 to 3 days. And if you feel comfortable with the system, then you can attempt to carry out a longer fasting period the next time around.

Indeed, water fasting is an effective method for losing weight and for cleansing the body from harmful chemicals and other toxic wastes. However, you should be aware of the pros and cons of adapting the method so as not to put your health at risk.
