Ways to Improve Memory
The human brain is similar to a library that stores memories of everything. Different kinds of memories are being stored in the different areas of the brain and these memories need to be retrieved at anytime of the day in just an instant. We need to optimize the functions of our brains and do these top 10 ways to improve our memory.
Drink in Moderation
A little dose of alcohol may be good for your health but too much of anything is not good. When you study for an exam or a presentation for the next day, you may find that drinking a glass of wine will help you concentrate better and keep you awake. However, always remember to drink in moderation because too much will give you headache and hangover the next day. Also keep in mind that if you have health problems or are pregnant, you should not even consider drinking alcohol.
If you are focused and are more attentive to the material or issue on hand, you will remember things better. Study in an area away from distractions, such as television, music, and maybe from the presence of other people. When in the classroom, it is important to listen attentively to the instructor while he is discussing. It will help you retain more information and easily retrieve this information for later use. When you are in a meeting with someone, pay attention to the person you are being introduced to. That way, you will remember their names better the next time you bump into each other somewhere.
Have a Regular Exercise
Getting your muscles to move will not only benefit your body, but also your brain. If your work involves only sitting on your office chair with your eyes glued to the computer the whole day, you will easily get tired and be less productive. If you find it hard to take a daily morning jog along the park, try brisk walking on your way to the office. While in the office, take a break in between paper works and do some stretching or jogging in place. During weekends, you can go swimming or attend dance classes. A more physically active person is more productive and has better cognitive performance.
One way to improve memory is to regularly and constantly update it. At the end of the day, take time to review the things that you have discussed in the classroom. If you review and study your materials regularly, your brain will have the time to update the previously stored information and adequately process them into your long-term memory.
One of the best ways to improve memory is practicing word-image association technique. This needs practice in order to make the technique work. For example, if you are having your breakfast and you placed your eyeglasses on the table, imagine that your glasses is a life-sized object and is sitting beside you while you share breakfast. Later on, if you will be looking for your glasses, you will remember that you placed it on the table. Creating associations amid something you need to commit to memory and an associated image will help you remember faster and will even be stored in your memory bank for a very long time.
Chunking is another way of improving your memory. It is a method of sectioning, dissecting or dividing long strings of information for it to be remembered easily. For example, your credit card is represented by 16 digits that are almost impossible to memorize. But if you notice how they print it on your card, these numbers are divided into 4 sets so that you will remember your credit card number easily. The technique is the same with your social security number, cellular phone numbers, or your license plate number. This also applies when you are in the grocery store. Categorize your shopping list according to the areas or sections in the grocery store. That way, you will have an easier shopping time and you do not have to go back and forth.
A good way to improve your memory is to try organizing and structuring the information you are studying. If you are preparing for an exam, study the subjects that are related to each other. You can also make outlines or notes of the topics that you will be studying so you will be able to focus more on the relevant information and make your study time easier and more relaxed. At home, keep your things organized and arranged. The next time you need a new pair of socks, you do not need to turn the house upside just because the other pair is missing.
This technique involves the creation of a visual display of a concept. Use colors, images and a few words to create a comprehensive or concise concept of the information you want to remember. When taking down notes, create a map about the things that you already know, what will be discussed, and the possible things that you need to know. Note the keywords that are important in the discussion and associate it with images or colors that may apply. Make sure that the mind map you are making is very easy to understand and that you will be able to remember the information needed the next time you view your mind map.
Attach Personal Significance
Never ever forget your mother-in-law’s birthday again or your wedding anniversary. When something is personally meaningful to you, there is no reason that you will forget on relevant information about it. When the time comes, you will have no difficulties of remembering and it will forever stay in your memory.
Practice Makes Perfect
The best way to remember information is to use it daily, apply it and share it with others. Keep an eye on small details and you will have better chances of remembering things and exercising your memory.
When you have good memory, you will be able to communicate better and excel in your work or studies. Be sure to practice and organize your thoughts in order to store information better.
